BMC is working hard to make it easier for people to ride their bikes. The BMC Teammachine SLR02 105 Bike presents a race-worthy bike that competes way above its price tag. SLR03 is a new frameset to the BMC line. It's a high-performing carbon-fiber steed that does much of what the WorldTour level SLR03 can do, but at a price that everyone can take advantage of.

The key to the SLR03 is BMC's utilization of their Accelerated Composites Evolution (ACE) technology. This is a modeling program that allows them to explore a huge range of possibilities in a compressed period of time. They input parameters and let it virtually shape, lay-up, and assemble thousands of frames without creating a single frameset. They then apply this knowledge to build a frameset that can maximize materials, shapes, and geometries to produce the best possible product given the parameters.

Here, they wanted a bike that rode like the SLR01, but built with lower-modulus carbon. They also wanted the smallest frame to have a low stand-over height for smaller riders. You'll see the smallest size has a 44.2cm seat tube, and it still rides like the rest of the bikes in the lineup.

The rest of the SLR03 size run works within the same SLR01 parameters, but as the sizes are a little different, it's only the 54 which matches up identically with the 54 SLR01. That 54 is also a 1230g frame, including paint and hardware.

BMC equipped this Teammachine with Shimano 105 5800 eleven-speed components. The slimmed 105 levers look just like Dura-Ace, and feel similar in the hand, with quick action and a light touch. The four-arm 50/34 crank is paired with an eleven-speed 11-32 cassette. The new lever arm of the front derailleur and cage plates of the rear help making shifting effortless.

Wheels are Shimano's WH-RS010’s with Continental Ultra Sport 2 SL folding tires. These are wheels a traditionalist will love. The hubs have conventional flanges and the spokes have J-bend spokes. The shallow-depths of the rims and straight-gauge spokes make this an ideal training wheel. The kind that you can ride in all conditions and over all kinds of pavement or lack thereof. And, on the rare occasion of spoke breakage, replacement will be easy. The tires have a tough, flexible casing, with ample rubber. Slow for racing, but long-lasting and grippy for training.

The SLR03 has a number of top features you won't frequently find on bikes in this range. One is the BB86 bottom bracket shell. It helps BMC stiffen up the frame by having the down tube and seat tube go wider, and the chain stays brace wider as well. The 1 1/8" to 1 1/2" tapered steerer helps with steering precision. The front derailleur hanger simplifies mounting the changer and reduces weight as well.

The BMC Teammachine SLR03 105 Bike is top-quality carbon-fiber at an aluminum price.
